Research into magazine front covers

I am a reader of the Rugby World magazine for many reason not just the fact that I’m rugby fan. I think the magazine is very well laid out and is clear and easy to read and the contents are really interesting. The main reason that makes me buy the Rugby World magazines is the Exciting front cover. This magazine on the left has a Very clear and bold Masthead and this is good because it allows us to clearly see the name of the magazine.  The magazine also has a picture of the England rugby captain in a medium shot this is a very good choice because all the rugby fans of the world know Lewis moody and therefore they will be enticed into buying the product. This front cover has three Lures on the left hand side towards the top; these are very good because it gives the reader an idea of what will be inside the magazine. The Rugby World magazine has a statement written along the top reading ‘the world’s bestselling rugby magazine’ this statement is very clever as it will make people believe that the magazine is really good and therefore they will buy the product. This Magazine also has a date on it so people can tell how new or old the magazine is. There is also a Price on the Magazine which is very important as it could make up someone’s mind whether they are going to buy the product or not. In the Very Centre of the page there is also a Lure in bold, this shows it’s important and a major headline which will make people want to read on more. The Lure is written as a question which is also a good point as it will make the reader try and answer the question in there head and then they will turn to that page that the story is on to see if there predictions where correct.  There is also a Puff on this Magazine front cover  in the bottom left corner it’s very important and worthy because they also make the reader want to read on and find out more about the subject stated. There is also a Pug in the bottom right corner of this front cover, this is good because it will get the reader excited and think that they can get something free or even win something. There is also a bar code at the bottom of the page and this is there for when someone buys the magazine.  

Research into student magazine. Front Cover and Contents page.

This magazine I have chosen is called Campus life. The masthead of the Magazine is clearly displayed at the top of the front cover in bold white Writing. The Color stands out a lot from the rest of the front color so the masthead really catches your eye. There is also a Puff on the front cover, which is highlighted in a red circle, this attracts your eye and is clearly makes you look at the circle before anything else on the Page, and this is because they want to entice you to buy the magazine. I think this magazine is mainly for students, I get this impression because of the masthead of the front cover, also every student belongs to a certain college or university so all students have a campus so this magazine is appealing to them.  On the front cover there are four lures, these are good because they are a bit like the contents page and they make the reader want to read on. There is also a date on the front cover, which is also useful.

  This Magazine Campus Life also has a good contents page, it outlines what the magazine is going to include, which is also good for the reader to look at if he/she is not sure whether to buy the magazine or not because it will make up there mind. There is also a small comic at the bottom of the contents page, which will make the reader want to continue the read. 

Research into Student Magazine's

 This Student magazine is really attractive in my opinion; it has a nice layout and nice clear type. The masthead reads ‘Student Surprise’ its written in clear red writing, which is good because it draws in the eye. I think the masthead is good; because it connotes that there will be lots of surprising information inside of the magazine, this will therefore make people more likely to read on.  On the magazine front cover there is a low angle shot looking up at a student reading a book in a medium close up shot. I think this is good because it shows that the students of this particular university are hard working. The pictures also shows a girl who is smiling and this will make people read on because they will think that the university life is enjoyable.  There are four cover lines on this front cover and this helps the reader get a feel for what is in the magazine, so I think its good that they are on the front cover. There is also a Lure on the bottom of the front cover, this will increase the chance of someone buying the magazine because they will want to have some free cheap food. There is also another lure on the front page, is says ‘ 10 tips to the smarter you.’ This is good because it will also make people want to read on.

This magazine also has a contents page it is clearly laid out with a very clear, easy to read font. It has 3 pictures of students enjoying their selves, which is always a good sign for an outside student looking at that uni. This contents page also has some small sub-stories on it which will unties the reader to read on, it also has the pages in which the stories are on. The page numbers are clearly labeled in Pink writing, which draws the reader’s eyes into the bright color and the story.

Introduction to preliminary exercise

Preliminary exercise- using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student (me) in a medium close-up plus some appropriately laid out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
